When to see an emergency dentist

If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us — we will help you decide. Common dental emergencies include:

Severe or persistent tooth pain

Pain that keeps you up at night, throbbing pain, or pain that does not respond to over-the-counter pain medication. This often indicates infection or nerve damage that needs prompt treatment.

Knocked-out tooth

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, time is critical — ideally we want to see you within 30 to 60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

Broken or chipped tooth

A fractured tooth, especially with sharp edges or exposed inner tooth, should be seen the same day to prevent infection and further damage.

Lost filling or crown

A lost filling or crown exposes the tooth underneath and is uncomfortable. We can usually replace or re-cement it quickly.

Dental abscess or swelling

Facial swelling, swollen gums, or a pimple-like bump on the gum often signals an infection that needs urgent attention.

Bleeding that will not stop

Persistent bleeding from the mouth following an injury or extraction should be assessed promptly.

If your jaw is broken, or if you have heavy facial bleeding or trauma, please go to a hospital emergency department first.

What to do before you get here

Knocked-out tooth

Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root). Rinse gently with water if dirty. If possible, place it back in the socket. Otherwise, store it in milk or saliva and call us immediately.

Severe tooth pain

Rinse with warm salt water and floss carefully to dislodge any trapped food. Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum.

Broken tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water. Save any broken fragments in milk or saliva. Apply a cold compress to the cheek to reduce swelling. Call us right away.

Swelling or abscess

Rinse with warm salt water several times a day. Apply a cold compress externally. Do not apply heat to the area. Call us — antibiotic treatment may be needed.

Lost filling or crown

If you have the crown, you can temporarily reseat it with dental cement from a pharmacy. Avoid chewing on that side. Call us to arrange a same-day re-cementation.

Bleeding after extraction

Bite firmly on a clean piece of gauze for 30–45 minutes. If bleeding does not stop, call us immediately.

Same-day emergency dental treatment in North York

When you call seesmile during business hours with a dental emergency, we do everything we can to see you the same day. Once you arrive:

01

Assessment

We examine the area, take any X-rays needed, and identify the source of your pain or damage. We will explain what is happening in plain language.

02

Immediate relief

Our first priority is getting you out of pain. Depending on the situation, this may involve local anesthesia, draining an abscess, temporary fillings, or antibiotics.

03

Definitive treatment

Where possible, we treat the underlying problem during the same visit — fillings, root canal therapy, re-cementing crowns, repairing chips, or stabilizing a knocked-out tooth.

04

Follow-up plan

If your case needs additional appointments (for example, completing a root canal with a crown), we book your follow-up before you leave and provide a written treatment plan.

Emergency dental cost and insurance

Emergency dental visits vary in cost depending on what is needed. Once we have examined you and identified the cause, we will provide a clear written estimate before any treatment beyond initial diagnosis begins.

Estimate before treatment

We will not surprise you with a bill. After the exam, you receive a written estimate of what is needed and what it will cost — you decide whether and when to proceed.

Insurance handled for you

Most dental insurance plans cover emergency exams and treatment. We review your benefits, submit claims for you, and direct-bill where your plan allows.

0% interest financing

If you need extensive emergency treatment and want to spread the cost, we offer 0% interest financing for up to 24 months on qualifying treatment plans.

Common questions about dental emergencies

Is this an emergency — should I come in today?

If you are in severe pain, have facial swelling, have a knocked-out or broken tooth, or are bleeding heavily, yes — please call us right away. If you are not sure, call (416) 222-7727 and we will help you decide whether you need to be seen today.

How much does an emergency dental visit cost?

Emergency visits vary depending on what is needed. After your exam, we provide a clear written estimate before any treatment beyond initial diagnosis begins. We will also review your insurance coverage with you.

Will my insurance cover an emergency visit?

Most dental insurance plans cover emergency exams and necessary follow-up treatment. We will review your benefits, submit claims on your behalf, and direct-bill where your plan allows.

Do you offer same-day appointments?

Yes — we reserve space in our daily schedule for emergencies. Call (416) 222-7727 and we will do everything we can to see you the same day.

My tooth was knocked out — what do I do?

Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently if dirty. If possible, place it back in the socket. Otherwise, store it in milk or saliva and come in right away — ideally within 30 to 60 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

Can I just take painkillers and wait it out?

Over-the-counter pain medication can help short-term, but ongoing severe tooth pain usually means infection or nerve damage that will not resolve on its own. Waiting often makes treatment more complex and more expensive.

What if it is after hours?

Call our main number and follow the after-hours guidance on our voicemail. For serious trauma, heavy bleeding, or a possible broken jaw, please go to a hospital emergency department first.

Am I a new patient if I have never been before?

Yes — and that is fine. Emergencies happen to people who do not have a regular dentist all the time. We see new patients for emergencies and can continue caring for you afterward if you choose.
